PHILOSOPHY STATEMENT

Business courses offer students the opportunity to explore and prepare for post-secondary

business programs. Students apply computer technology to manage and present information

using a variety of media. We provide students with a thorough understanding of the

organization, functions, methods, and social significance of the American system of business

BUSINESS EDUCATION

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Courses in this department may be used to fulfill the one year required Applied Arts credit for graduation.

0502 ACCOUNTING I is a yearlong course open to grades 10 through 12. Class Fee: $10.00.

Prerequisite: None.

Accounting I is a comprehensive program designed to help students meet two broad objectives: 1)

preparation for post-secondary education in the business field and, 2) preparation for employment. This

course helps students understand basic accounting principles and procedures that are applied to

business transactions. Students will record transactions and prepare basic reports such as balance

sheets and income statements. Computerized accounting programs are explored during the fourth

quarter of the class. Each year Community High School District #128 participates in a countywide

accounting contest held at the College of Lake County with the winners receiving scholarships,

trophies, and ribbons. Students are recognized at Abbott Labs for their achievements. Students may

receive 3 hours of college credit through the College of Lake County (Accounting 112) by successfully

completing this course with a grade of "B" or higher.

0504 ACCOUNTING II is a yearlong course open to grades 11 through 12. Class Fee: $10.00.

Prerequisite: Accounting I.

Accounting II contributes to students' background knowledge of the operations of all types of

businesses. It increases the technical competence of those who will seek business employment as

accountants and builds an excellent foundation in accounting for those seeking post-secondary

education in accounting. Computerized accounting programs are explored during the fourth quarter of

the class.

0506 ACCOUNTING II HONORS is a yearlong course open to grades 11 through 12. Class Fee:

$10.00. Prerequisite: Accounting I.

Accounting II Honors contributes to students' background knowledge of the operations of all types of

businesses. It increases the technical competence of those who will seek business employment as

accountants and builds an excellent foundation in accounting for those seeking post-secondary

education in accounting. Computerized accounting programs are explored during the fourth quarter of

the class. Students will be required to job shadow an accounting professional throughout the year, will

use a software program for a small business, complete an analytical project each semester, and will be

assigned case studies periodically throughout the year.

0512 and 0514 BUSINESS INTERNSHIP is a yearlong course open to grades 11 through 12.

Class Fee: $10.00. Prerequisite: Students must be 16 years of age, complete an application and

be interviewed by the teacher/coordinator to discuss career goals and job placement PRIOR to

being accepted.

Business Internship, an education to careers program, applies classroom knowledge to the business

environment. Students are released from school to work a minimum average of 15 hours per week in

the business environment. Students earn a salary at a place of employment and two credits toward

graduation. A training plan for each student is developed and approved by the teacher/coordinator. A

full-year program provides the greatest opportunity to reach each student's individual goals and

objectives. Students may choose to extend their studies in this class by re-enrolling for grade and

credit with the approval of the instructor.

0515, 0516 BUSINESS MATHEMATICS is a semester course, offered both semesters and open

to grades 10 through 12. Class Fee: $10.00. Prerequisite: None.

Business Mathematics is the application of mathematical concepts to practical business situations and

problems. The goals include the development and improvement of specific business and math skills

that will enable students to function effectively as intelligent consumers in the marketplace and in a

career environment. Units will include payroll, banking, budgeting, recordkeeping, sales, taxes, and

personnel records. Students will need a calculator. The credit earned in Business Mathematics may be

applied toward the Mathematics credits required for graduation.

0521, 0522 COMPUTER APPLICATIONS is a semester course, offered both semesters and open

to grades 9 through 12. Class Fee: $10.00. Prerequisite: Keyboarding, Computer Skills or

concurrent enrollment.

Computer Applications prepares students to be competitive in today's high-tech world by developing

competencies in word processing, spreadsheet, desktop publishing, database, and presentation

programs. In a "learn-by-doing" environment, students will complete activities and projects using

Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher, Access, and PowerPoint. Internet activities are an integral part of

the course. Students may choose to extend their studies in this class by re-enrolling for grade and

credit. Skills learned in this class can prepare students for future Microsoft Office Specialist

Certification.

0527, 0528 CONSUMER EDUCATION is a semester course, offered both semesters and open to

grade 12. Prerequisite: None.

Consumer Education helps prepare students for life on their own. Students will gain the knowledge

necessary to make wise economic decisions that will benefit their personal and professional lives. The

major areas of study will focus on checking accounts and online banking, budgeting, using credit,

advertising, car and home buying, insurance, renting an apartment, comparison shopping, and good

financial management. Each student will have fun investing in the stock market by choosing stocks,

and buying and selling stocks, for a period of time through a competitive, simulated project. This

course meets the Consumer Education requirement for graduation.

0541, 0542 INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS is a semester course, offered both semesters and

open to grades 9 through 11. Class Fee: $10.00. Prerequisite: None.

Introduction to Business provides students with a better understanding of business practices and

procedures. The course provides business and economic information that is important to those who

wish to pursue a degree or career in business. Students explore all of the functional areas of business

including management, finance, accounting, marketing, human resources, production of goods and

services, and information systems. Internet research will be incorporated throughout the course to

provide students with up-to-date information on current business trends.

0531, 0532 KEYBOARDING is a semester course, offered both semesters and open to grades 9

through 12. Class Fee: $10.00. Prerequisite: None.

Efficient use of the computer is a necessity in today's high-tech, competitive world. Keyboarding is a

skill course that combines touch-typing and basic word processing. Beginners learn and develop their

touch-typing skill while those students with some previous experience increase their skills to a higher

level. Students will use a combination of tutorial software and Microsoft Word. Word Processing

skills are used to create letters, tables, and other documents important for school, career or personal

use. Community High School District #128 and college report formatting procedures are also covered.

Class assignments may include Internet activities.

0534 KEYBOARDING FUNDAMENTALS is a yearlong course open to grades 9 through 12.

Class fee: $20.00. Prerequisite: Placement.

Keyboarding Fundamentals offers students individualized instruction to develop keyboarding skills. A

combination of tutorial software and Microsoft Word will be used. Word processing tasks include

personal and business letters, tables, and reports. Internet activities are included in this course.

0550 MANAGEMENT is a semester course, offered second semester and open to grades 10

through 12. Class Fee: $10.00. Prerequisite: None.

Management provides an excellent background for students pursuing a business major in college.

Management is the study of the structure and practices of business organizations operating under our

free enterprise economy. Topics include: international business, entrepreneurship, total quality

management, organizational teamwork, human resources, leadership styles, labor-management

negotiations, and multicultural diversity. Students will examine the environment of small business

ownership, the procedures and skills necessary to manage and open a small business and the policies

and practices of a successful business operation. Students will be using computer applications and the

Internet to explore business trends in management.

0551 MARKETING is a semester course, offered first semester and open to grades 10 through

12. Class Fee: $10.00. Prerequisite: None.

With business being the most popular major in American colleges, why not get ahead by enrolling in

Marketing? This course focuses on topics such as promotion, pricing, purchasing, visual

merchandising, market research, product planning and entrepreneurship. Teaching methods include

teamwork, Internet exploration, computer applications, guest speakers, and class discussion. Teams of

marketing students will package, market, and present a product they create.

0547, 0548 MULTIMEDIA is a semester course, offered both semesters and open to grades 9

through 12. Class Fee: $10.00. Prerequisite: Keyboarding, Computer Skills or concurrent

enrollment.

Multimedia is a unique production-oriented course presented in an interactive multimedia lab. In an

atmosphere of "learning by doing", students will produce desktop and group presentations using

Microsoft PowerPoint. An emphasis will be placed on the design and development of presentations for

school and business use. Students will be exposed to a variety of technologies including use of the

scanner, digital drawing tablet, digital camera, CD-ROM and still-frame and video capture equipment.

Presentations will be enhanced by the use of additional techniques including image and sound editing.

Use of the Internet is an integral part of the course. This course is intended for students who desire to

learn emerging technologies and who are self-directed, motivated and creative. Students may choose to

extend their studies in this class by re-enrolling for grade and credit. Extended study students will

increase their skills in the above areas and will learn some multimedia applications for the Internet.

Skills learned in this class can prepare students for future Microsoft Office Specialist Certification.

0560 SPORTS AND ENTERTAINMENT MARKETING is a semester course, offered second

semester and open to grades 10 through 12. Class Fee: $10.00. Prerequisite: Marketing.

Sports and Entertainment Marketing explores marketing's impact in sports and entertainment. The relationship that exists between celebrities, sports, and business will be explored. Topics will include the management of sports and entertainment as a product, collegiate and professional licensing endorsement, agents, public relations, legal aspects, and the future of sports and entertainment relating to business. Students will use computer simulations, cooperative learning, in-class activities, and student projects as learning tools.
